Recognized artist at ENIGMA
With support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, ENIGMA acquires the artwork A Colorful Inheritance from My Grandfather by Nicolai Howalt. The 220 x 120 cm work consists of over 5,000 stamps, from the oldest editions of the 19th century to modern stamps up to the year 2000, which together form an aesthetic motif and create the experience of color abstraction.
ENIGMA is Denmark’s only museum for post, tele and communication. The museum houses a large collection of the 400-year history of the post office from Christian d. IV establishment in 1624 and up to the present day. In addition, the museum maintains Denmark’s largest stamp collection. The acquisition of Howalt’s works is part of ENIGMA’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Danish postal service.
Artistic communication of the history of communication
A Colorful Inheritance of My Grandfather is part of ENIGMA’s large collection of objects and works of art. Among other things, the museum maintains the collection of original works that have formed the basis for Denmark’s art stamps. With his work, Howalt unfolds the cultural history of the stamp anew and creates a different and valuable entry point for putting one of the museum’s core areas into perspective.
Program and Exhibition Manager Malene Dybbøl states:
“Like the entire Danish Communication Museum, we communicate the history of communication and put it in relation to the present. Thanks to support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the public can now delve into the many stories that the stamps represent. At the same time, the work, in its use of an inherited collection, will resonate well with many of our visitors, and can be used in our communication as a creative starting point to start a “conversation” about a dying cultural heritage.” Experience A Colorful Inheritance from My Grandfather by Nicolai Howalt at ENIGMA Museum for Post, Tele and Communication, from Tuesday 17 December 2024.
